The closure announcement of my Neocities website. Part of it (character limits) is below. I first moved from Google Sites to Neocities with a Linktree-style site this time last year - August 2023 - in response to their "Web Environment" BS. I never fully launched this replacement site until February 2024, after several delays and changes in web software, first in FrontPage, then briefly to WebPlus, then back to FrontPage again. Yes, I know - now is not the time to talk about FOSS/Linux/non-MS and all that. During these months, I've done what I can (within Neocities' free plan) to prevent my website being scraped by so called "AI" companies - what I can to prevent the little work I have being stolen. Between the launch in Feb and July, the only changes to the site contents were to update the robots.txt with this one every one or two weeks. But the revelations that some companies are changing the names of their crawlers led me to simply disallow, through wildcards, all user agents in late July. We have now reached the point where these companies are completely ignoring robots.txt and resorting to only allowing blocks via server-side filtering. With Neocities free plan already preventing me from uploading such extensions as .bmp and anything not in an approved list, it's obvious that I simply cannot do this level of configuration. Now, my site, a site I've tried to protect with the little resources I have, is at risk.
