It's easy to sound authoritative when your argument is based on a false dichotomy. Western philosophy has never let go of the nature vs. nurture debate, and the tabula rasa theory is centuries old. (I tend to think of it as being a specifically Catholic idea, though I don't know if it was ever church doctrine.)
