When someone close to you says they were called a slur, and you react by saying: "I don't know why they would do that," you are implying that you believe bigotry is a deserved reaction and not simply hatred. You are saying that the bigot has so much character that their actions could only be explained by the faults of another.
Bigotry is a fault in the character of the bigot, NOT of their targets. Bigotry is a cause in itself.
Making excuses for bigots while blaming their victims is wrong.
