There's no censorship or conspiracy in these changes, just complications in the editing process. Mitchell submitted the same manuscript to both UK and US editors, both suggested changes, but not all changes suggested by the UK editor made it to the US and vice versa.
The differences went largely unchanged until 2016 when professor Martin Paul Eve of Birkbeck, University of London, published a paper detailing the versions and their history.
