It's so annoying when people make excuses for what Trump meant.
First, it's not your job to explain what he meant. Second, why would you do the heavy lifting for him when you don't actually know what his intentions were; are you going to take responsibility for getting it wrong? Third, he's constantly testing the boundaries and when you give him a pass, he'll keep pushing that boundary.
Always take him at his word and make him correct the record. And when he contradicts himself, challenge him.
