The way for a mouse (or other device) to last forever is to *not* rely on firmware updates or subscriptions (and make the hardware repairable). I'm still using the same Microsoft trackball that I got as a student 25 years ago, which is just a standard USB HID device. When it finally goes, it'll be because it physically breaks in a way I can't fix.
