I didn't meet my first "out" queer person until college in the early '80s. And I was raised in a "liberal" metroplex.
I could not have imagined seeing gay marriage much less insurance coverage and legal protections (in some areas) for gender transition in my lifetime. That was unimaginable to me and many others when I was young. Too huge of a taboo! And society has shifted bigtime on this (which...again...right-wing backlash).
Things seem better and worse in a mix.
