In 2022, we all watched the NASA DART spacecraft ram into Dimorphos, the small moonlet of asteroid Didymos.
Study of data from that mission has now provided clues on how the moonlet might have formed.
This fascinating visualization demonstrates how the spin-up of asteroid Didymos could have led to the growth of its equatorial ridge, launching of rocks into orbit and subsequent coalescing and formation of Dimorphos ~30,000 years ago.
