This mutant not-invented-here thing was made by Apple as the result of 1.2MB high density not being standard yet coupled with the fear from within Apple's storage division of physical latches and the (correct) fear that users would switch disks out from under LisaOS.
The Sony 3.5 drive saved the day (especially on Mac, which almost shipped with Fileware!), but it was a year too late for LISA intro.
