Thinking about that advanced chemistry class this evening and I'm shooting for some big changes. I'm generally pretty laissez faire about phones in class because they lead to natural consequences, but with this class, I need to go more heavy handed.
Starting Monday - phones banished during class time. The majority of students think they can split attention. They're either forfeiting their own attention or distracting someone else. It's just "normal," but it can't be anymore.
