I don't think life in Europe in the middle ages was great. But it wasn't a period without development.
I like to believe we as a society have and can make progress, culturally and with technology.
But witch hunting and racism in Europe are inventions of the early modern period, the same period when empirical science emerged. Racism got worse as new technology let Europe dominate in more places, as a convenient excuse for empire.
Don't blame the middle ages. Darkness is closer to us.
