When we were visiting relatives in Colorado, we went on a short walk and encountered an elk calf. It was wobbling and looking unhappy, and it tried to follow us back to the house. No mom in sight.
The local ranger came out. He thought maybe it had gotten into some loco-weed (Datura). He said he'd leave it overnight to see if a mother appeared. If not, it will be killed and tested in a lab. (He wasn't in favor of our "bring it home and nurse it back to health" suggestion.)
elk calf, wobbling and sickly though that's not entirely obvious in the photo
