Someone asked in the Q&A about the toolchain for using C with R. I gave an answer about calling one’s own C code, but forgot to talk about resources for working with C in base R, which is more relevant in the context of a talk about contributing to R. For that, check out the R Dev Container. It provides a codespace set up with all the necessary tools to allow people to make changes to a checkout of the R source code (including the C functions) and rebuild R from source.
