Here's an NES RFU/power module. This is what it looks like inside.

The 4 diodes near the power in make up a full-wave bridge, so here's a cheat: find an adapter that's 9VDC (any polarity; the bridge sorts that) at at least 1A, and whose barrel fits the NES. You're feeding REGULATED DC in now, and the little 5VDC regulator hiding in the heatsink at the rear will run cooler. (less to do!)

That RF modulator was HARD to remove from the NES mainboard, too! Even with proper tools.
