Remember that LLMs are not calculators. They are association machines. So here’s how I imagine it really goes:
Me: Multiply 26 by 8200
LLM: oh oh, I think I know this one! I want to say.… 212,000
And I’m thinking, not a bad guess at all, since it’s actually 213,200.
As a calculator, it sucks. As a best guess machine, it’s impressive.
