New post! "Home Assistant backups, restic, gzip’s rsyncable flag"
in which I find out that a small change to how backups are assembled saves me 80% of storage and allows almost indefinite retention of Home Assistant backups.
tl;dr: if gzip and restic interact anywhere for you, you should consider passing --rsyncable to gzip, or not using gzip at all.
