So we had what was supposed to be "plain text, but with some sugar", instead we have "html, but with weird quotation marks and conventions borrowed from wiki syntax".
Markdown, along with RST, should be written with the terminal user in mind. That means fitting text in on a roughly 80x25 terminal (yes, I use those - a lot of them). It means formatting things for a plain text editor, not a web browser.
If you are writing a document you want to be primarily viewed in a browser, just use HTML.
