When I grew up, I remember being taught that dictatorships run elections with a single party, democracies run elections with many parties.
In the elections that just happened in France, 90% of seats went to 10 major parties forming 4 alliances, 6% to minor parties within those alliances, 4% to parties and independents that ran outside of those alliances.
While the US obviously doesn't have a single party, it is also very far from having the political diversity of modern democracies.
