Note that an X9 flare is 9 times more powerful than an X1 and so on.
In modern times, the largest solar flare occurred on 4 Nov 2003 at X45.
The 1859 Carrington Event was estimated at X50.
So, this X9.0 flare is relatively small. It did trigger shortwave radio blackouts over Africa and Europe, as its electromagnetic energy, traveling at the speed of light, arrived minutes later. The CME, if any, will arrive a few days later and produce bright auroras.
