It's unbelievable that NYT can't directly say in their articles that tariffs would be paid by American companies to the US government, with the costs largely passed on to the US consumer. In other words, that they are essentially a sales tax. Clearly imposing a sales tax and then using it to, say, pay for childcare is not the same as getting other countries to pay for US childcare. It's not complicated, but the Times can't seem to bear to call it out for the nonsense it is. Why?
