The key to this Seven Seas Deity challenge was the religious victory condition. It was just a little too difficult to go for domination given the gradual damage you take in the poisoned sea water. I actually found the barbarian ships the hardest part because they didn't take any of that damage, so they could almost always win in naval combat. Every other civ took damage though. Severely limited trade routes for everyone the whole game. Also, no civ broke out of the "dark age" cycle.
