A tachinid fly perched on pussytoes (Antennaria).

A black-bristled ash-gray fly with caramel-colored legs perches delicately atop a bouquet of white, urn-shaped flower buds. The fly's large oval eyes are the color of unpolished garnets. Each bud is made of tightly furled petals. Some buds are yellow at their tips.

The fly's sponge-on-a-stick mouthparts are extended toward the flowers. Its chunky, downturned antennae like two sausages and lines of forward-arching bristles give its face a scowl, as though its concentrating intensely.

Its transparent brown-tinted wings lined with delicate branching veins trail out and back. Underneath them we see the light yellow flap of a calypter.

What a handsome fellow!
