The issue with BepiColombo’s electric/ion thrusters lies in the electrical power control unit in the MTM module.
BepiColombo carries 2 orbiters - ESA’s Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) and JAXA’s Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (MMO). The two are transported by the Mercury Transfer Module (MTM), which provides power and thrust for the spacecraft.
The MTM contains 4 T6 ion thrusters, which ionize xenon gas, accelerate ions to high speeds and eject them to produce low intensity thrust.
