Prison overcrowding has dominated the headlines in the the UK for the past few days, but there’s depressingly little discussion about why we’re imprisoning so many people, with the prison population doubling over the past 30 years. There’s lots of data in this House Of Commons Library document: https://researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk/documents/SN04334/SN04334.pdf
A graph of the prison population in England and Wales since 1900. The population was around 20,000 in 1900, dropped to around 10,000 between 1915 and 1940, and then steadily rose, reaching 40,000 in 1970, 65,000 in 2000, and 85,000 today.
