I'm beginning to wonder if there's anyone left alive that knows how an original Mac booted from the floppy drive
I'm just going to guess by what noises the 400k drive makes on boot that it doesn't start reading the boot blocks until it is on block 0 (i.e., the higher-pitched noises it makes after the startup chord are red herring) and MFS is the usual Apple "boot blocks are on 0 and 1" thing, like HFS+, HFS, and ProDOS (and DOS 3.x, but only half of block 0 counts)
