I am not personally responsible for the historical misdeeds of people and institutions in my country, the Netherlands. Slavery, colonialism. My ancestors too were afaik poor, peasants. Little control.
But it's people from my culture who did this. These institutions have historical continuity.
So I think it's very important to be aware of this history, and feel it once in a while. This is us, too. If we don't have this awareness, how can we genuinely improve our culture, to prevent new harms?
