TIL: When chickens are lying half-dead on their sides, covered in mud, eyes closed, it's called dust bathing and nothing to worry about.

This is when chickens use their third eyelids, known as nictitating membranes β€” these transparent eyelids can be closed to keep out dust and debris while maintaining vision. Pecking at the ground is common, both to loosen more dirt and upon discovering a tender root or an insect.

Chickens do eat dirt β€” small pebbles and grit are consumed to help with digestion of food in the crop and minerals found in wood ash can supplement the diet.

While dust bathing, chickens may seem to enter a trance-like state and even appear to fall asleep at times.

If approached, they may be slower than usual to startle and take evasive action.

Flocks usually dust bathe in groups and this pleasant activity may go on for quite some time.
