A developer test can test a small or big part of the application, integrated or not, as long as it's relatively easy to write, not dependent on state you don't control, and fast enough to run. It's not a test written primarily to verify the application works for end users.
It's written by you, the developer to support you during development. You usually write it close in time to the code you write that it tests.
