For certain consumer-electronics adjacent lab equipment I would expect there to be advances that make them much cheaper over time the same way that happened to lab PCs
However, data acquisition hardware and low light sensitive cameras suitable for a confocal microscope don't seem to have hit that same nonlinear price per performance decrease.
Spending money to fix an old sensicam qe, and digidata 1332 might still be cheaper than replacing the old hardware...
