I just finished this short book the director of the Bibliotheque National Jeanneny wrote in 2005 in response to Google’s project to digitize 15 million books to make available ‘the world’s knowledge’. It articulates a European counter-perspective, drawing out problems the project raises for cultural diversity and questioning the free market based approach to public goods (information goods in particular).
I was struck by how relevant it seemed to the current moment of #LLM based search
Cover of the book Google and the myth of universal knowledge (a view from Europe). In the middle of the image is the word Google in blue, with the first o a picture of the Earth overlaid with a red circle with a red diagonal through is (basically crossing it out)
