There's a few things I'm not too fond of, such as the 1-based, column major indexing, but I can live with it. I also get the impression that it takes longer to “boot”, which may make it less desirable for shorter-running code. It also has some surprising performance quirks: you may have three or four ways to do the same matrix update, but which one is faster isn't always obvious —testing on your actual datasets seems to be the only way to actually tell.
