I am rereading Le Roy Ladurie’s Montaillou after more than 15 years on occasion of our summer holidays south of Foix. It is such a powerful argument for social (micro) history and a reminder of why I entered the field of history in the first place. Despite all the joy I find in digital humanities (and particularly in the company of its practitioners), the book on the streets of Damascus languishing on my computer and being pushed back year after year by “more urgent” papers on infrastructural injustices (and care work), needs to be finished!
