Cement is [one of the] most devastating and problematic substance from the aspect of climate change. It is a main component of concrete, that will be ever more needed in a fast urbanizing world.
This video is explaines the problems with this, up till now, vital material.

One can exchange the other components gravel and sand for other, recycled materials. That is indeed a big progress but the main problem will be the cement.
For every ton cement a ton of new CO2 is produced. This is a chemical consequence of the production of the commodity.
In 'toot' nr 390 I shared a video on the LEILAC procedure. This procedure captures the CO2 in the proces so it can be stored instead of dumping it in the atmosphere. Again a big progress, but still insufficient on the grand scale. Even if it was applied globally.
The only significant progress is using less concrete. A big problem in the fast urbanizing world.
Possibilities are: reusing existing buildings and using other materials, like wood.
And I won't mention the terrible heatsink effects of concrete that makes using concrete near inpossible for [sub]tropical areas in the future.

Concrete's dirty emissions problem. In this Our Changing Climate climate change video essay, I look at how concrete and cement are destroying the planet. Specifically, I unpack why and how concrete and cement work, how concrete and cement create greenhouse gas emissions, how concrete causes climate change, and I also look at the possibility of green cement and concrete. Concrete, through the chemical processes that occur during the production phase, produces a lot of carbon dioxide emissions. For this reason, the concrete industry is one of the largest contributors of greenhouse gases in the world. That also means, however, that concrete could prove a perfect solution to fighting climate change. Green cement and concrete inventions are racking up. Some, like cement and concrete that could sequester and capture carbon leading the way to viable alternatives to conventional cement and concrete."
