My dad just asked me what to do if he cannot determine someones sex or gender.
"Well I can just ask her pronouns right? Oh, wait, if I don't know she's she, than what do I say?"
me: "they"
"but if she's they how do I ask?"
me: "ask their name and pronouns and until you know them only refer to them by name"
He was of course referring to a gender nonconformist I work often with. I don't know their pronouns because I'm too shy to ask but it fills me with pride to know my dad comes to me for help on these things.
Yeah, he's an old boomer so misgendering happens all the time but he truly wants the best for all of us. An ignorant, yet well meaning person.
Be patient with people who don't quite get it yet, they aren't your enemy.
