Surely tho, it applies to all plant leaves in cities, not only trees?
Could be one of the reasons why pretty butterflies are so scarce, I guess.
In my immediate neighbourhood, they changed the mowing and branch-cutting rhythm 2-3 years ago. Now they let things grow throughout late spring and summer. And this summer for the first time I have lived here, I saw butterflies! 3 different kinds.
If they dimmed the streetlights, too, maybe it'd increase to 5 or 6 kinds of butterflies?
