404 #ClimateSolutions #Cement #Alternatives
As I pointed out in 'toot' 402 and 390, [the production of] cement has a huge impact on the #ClimateEmergency. The solution has two angles: one is the improvement of the manufacturing of cement; another is to avoid using it. Yet another is reusing standing buildings, but that's for another 'toot'.
One of the very viable alternatives is building with wood.

The Netherlands faces a paradoxical task: build more and emit less. To solve the housing shortage, one million homes must be built by 2030, but current construction with concrete exceeds environmental standards. Is wood construction the solution?
Currently, many new construction projects are on hold because they run up against international agreements on CO2 reduction and nitrogen. If we continue building in the current way with cement, concrete and steel, the construction of 1 million new homes releases about 55 million tons of CO2.
But there is an alternative: building with wood. The new 'cross laminated timber' - or CLT: Cross Laminated Timber - causes no emissions, but actually stores CO2. Also, with CLT 'prefab' construction can be much faster. Because even high-rise buildings can be constructed with the extremely strong and fire-resistant CLT, the wood was quickly nicknamed “the new concrete.
What are the opportunities and obstacles to using CLT widely in construction? Are we on the eve of a “wooden century”? Or is this story too good to be true?”
