Find out what specific cells your uses. For example, a EVE ICR18650 has a 7.5 Amp discharge MAX rate, not to be sustained 24/7 but rather for slightly extended periods of time. And it's charge rate? 1.25 Amps MAX.

If you overstep this line, you have probably damaged the cell, and caused everyone who knows battery chemistry a great deal of worry.

Once that happens, the electrolyte layer between the lithium ion and the other parts of the cell is perforated at a micro or maco-scopic scale and begins to either runaway inevitably or the cell peters out and "puffs" and then becomes a grenade or paperweight.

A overcurrent while charging will be much more damaging and dangerous than a discharge overcurrent. Many BMS circuits don't properly regulate charge current, leading to battery fires.

To give one single solution to a complex problem; I would recommend installing both a fuse and an all-encompassing BMS into your battery if unsure of it's current BMS capability.

The average 36v 10ah battery can put out 15 amps constant current discharge pretty comfortably, but charging it can only take MAX 9 amps before reaching into potential fire danger.

Do not challenge the expensive claymore grenade under your ass to a physics experiment. I have, and I still have fragments of the battery case in my legs, along with the other bits of metal from the literal explosives ;).
