Oslo is the capital city of Norway, a member of the European Economic Area. The fjord bottom harbours the most-trading port in the country.
The city claims to be on a path to become the new hub for drug trafficking in Europe. Anne Lindboe, the (conservative) mayor of Oslo, has declared so to the state-owned radio and television public broadcasting company. Because traffickers are facing too much repression in the port of Antwerp, Belgium, the current European trafficking hub with major seizures, the port of Oslo may undergo traffic growth.
As a result, there have been drug seizures - more than 1,800 in 2023. That's more than in the last 10 years combined. But Norway's largest port handles 243,000 containers a week, which cannot be checked as they should be because of a lack of customs officers. The port is not even equipped with a full-time scanner. The device is shared with other ports in the country. In response, the government is promising an increase in the customs budget to recruit and to buy more equipment. But trafficking is already well established, with consequences for Norway, which is now Europe's 3rd largest consumer of cocaine, according to the article.
