We already know it's too late to prevent at least 1.5°C of global temperature rise above the pre-industrial baseline. Even staying under 2° seems in doubt at this point.
That does not mean we should stop trying, of course — because every tenth of a degree matters. Actions taken now might still prevent a very bad outcome from turning into a catastrophic outcome.
But the challenge we face is daunting. There are indications that the Earth system may already have passed certain tipping points.
Look at global sea ice, for example. It's at the lowest recorded level for this date, WAY below what is typically seen.
