This movie I suspect will be an Hong Kong classic soon enough. If anyone is interested in a bit of historical HK grittiness, I can totally recommend this film. The walled city was taken down in 1993. During the film, my aunt and dad would pause sometimes and point out landmarks and talk about the places they used to go to for food in there. It was a seedy, ungovernable place.
I heard about it as a kid but never made it to HK before it got taken down. There's an honour code this film uses that I think is even stronger than C dramas.
Totally different from the normal Hollywood tropes. My dad, who left the HK triads when long distance phone calls were $3 a minute and airfare was half a year's salary, was actually able to extract himself from this world. Anyone interested in learning about this aspect of HK culture will get a lot of this film.
