Interesting piece on Biodiversity Net Gain, essentially a form of offsetting where if you damage wildlife while building a new housing estate, you are required to rewild somewhere else (often low quality farmland), including a 10% gain in overall biodiversity.

The new offsetting? Maybe. I'd like to see more analysis of the whole lifecycle; this only talks about one side of the equation. But still, it's driving rewilding, and some construction is hard to avoid at this point given our ongoing housing crisis and all the problems that causes.

Anyone going to argue that we should be demolishing houses and turning them into tower blocks to avoid having to build on the greenbelt?

Mostly I see the greenbelt battles as hypocrisy about spoiling people's views (and therefore property prices). But on the other hand, densification *may* be necessary.
