The issue with tricycles in the non-enthusiast world is that they have little easy support or access. Parts are easy to find if they are congruent with their two-wheeled counterparts: derailleurs, tires, cranks, bearings. But as soon as you begin to look for trike-specific parts: driven wheels, band brakes, axle collars, they become a nightmare to find quality parts for.

The other issues are operational, in that instead of providing even a simple differential only one rear wheel is driven and brake capable. This, as I have infuriatingly discovered, makes climbing even slightly loose surfaces near impossible.

The structural stability of trikes is normally great in a longitudinal dimension, but in the other, not so much. The bending of the trike frame causes inexperienced riders to sway and counterturn where they don't need to. This is extremely dangerous to both the rider and anything or anyone in the vicinity of the trike's path.

The solution is simple: start building trikes how they used to be built. Include a dual downtube frame, differential, threadless headset, flatbed platform on the axle, and make them out of thicker gauge Al/CrMo tubing.

Bakfiet bikes are excellent and all, but they are inaccessible to most people who don't already know the savings or techniques living in the saddle.

Without trikes, a huge chunk of society is left without a bike-like means of conveyance and leaves them to pursue less flexible vehicles such as minicars, mobility devices (electric wheelchairs, etc), and full size autos.

I cannot stress how important it is for bike manufacturers to begin focusing on 3+ wheel bikes as we spiral into M.A.D.

Just recently I attempted to carry a 103 kg concrete antenna pole stabilizer on previously mentioned trike, and I didn't make it but 70 meters. Even with a huge weight in the back, the trike's driven wheel skidded up a slight grade.

I may be able to lift 200+ kg and be able to put out 1 kw of pedal power for short periods of time, but with only one driven wheel, a trike is useless.

In the mean time, simple somewhat-solution is to weld the undriven wheel to the axle, making a tied axle with no differential. On a trike, the lean from side to side during turning should suffice to prevent steering lockups.

I shouldn't have to have a machine shop at my disposal just to make a tricycle usable for utility.
