I feel like the generations in my family are living in different worlds now. As a gen x of relative privilege mine is one of long working hours and also volunteering / getting involved in marches and things just to try for a future that’s not totally catastrophic. I’m not expecting a retirement because I think the global economy will have collapsed before then. I’m trying to help my kids lead their best lives now because who knows what awaits them. It feels like a huge burden, not just earning a living but feeling a precarious future is in your hands. All the time having to cheer on the latest trips and adventures of your parents who retired at 55 on final salary pensions. Don’t get me wrong they worked incredibly hard in their time and help us out a lot and I’m grateful but it’s just that our worlds are getting further apart now and it’s harder to keep up the pretence that everything is fine.
